Avengers Comics Fixed a Massive Civil War II Mistake Involving Captain Marvel
Avengers #2 has a more earnest Captain Marvel making up for Civil War II, but her endearing actions could bring about another apocalypse.
The following contains spoilers for Avengers #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
In Marvel's new Avengers run, Carol Danvers has had quite the task when it comes to a rebuild. She's hired Sam Wilson as Captain America, while bringing back familiar faces such as Iron Man, Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch and Black Panther to the mix. She thinks this is the A-team she needs to inspire the world under the Earth's Mightiest Heroes banner once again.
However, Avengers #2 (by Jed MacKay, C.F. Villa, Federico Blee and VC's Cory Petit) has revealed a much greater destiny. It's all due to the sinister Kang the Conqueror, who comes bearing gifts and a cynical deal. In the process, Captain Marvel gets a chance to fix what she did wrong in Civil War II, but it leaves readers wondering about the consequences of the team's actions.

Civil War II focused on Carol coming off a bit fascist after discovering an Inhuman, Ulysses, gained the ability to predict the future. She used him to tempt fate, but sadly, a fight against Thanos led to She-Hulk being hospitalized and War Machine dying. It infuriated Tony Stark, who despised Carol's attempts to play god and alter the future. This created two factions as Stark realizing Ulysses' visions weren't set in stone. Instead, they were just a snapshot of high probability events.
Captain Marvel remained stubborn, though. She roped in the Guardians, while Stark used the X-Men in what would become another debacle. While differences were put aside, Carol's rued that lapse in judgment ever since. Thankfully, they've moved past that mess, but Carol is given a similar boon come Avengers #2. This time, Kang works with Carol in Null-Time (a unique pocket dimension), affirming he can provide details on saving 1,000 lives. They're meant to die in the next 24 hours, but with his list, Carol can prevent them.
She's reluctant at first, but ends up communicating with her peers. This is the Carol that would have avoided the Civil War II drama -- one who's open, honest and vulnerable. She coordinates a massive relief effort, with Black Panther stopping Hydra terrorists in Mexico, Thor saving folks from a train crash in India, and Vision and Stark saving a downed plane in Ireland. Wanda uses her portals to make the project run smoothly and efficiently, although Carol's still skeptical. The leader ends the story waiting for Kang to come out his coma to learn the rest about why this bargain has been offered.

Now, before Kang passed out from his injuries, he made it clear the Impossible City would unleash threats in something he calls Tribulation Events. These are cataclysmic wars he has to prepare the Avengers for. Future solicits confirm this city would be sending monsters known as the Ashen Combine down to Earth for various scraps. Apparently, they're scary entities from all over the Multiverse.
However, Kang hasn't fully revealed how they're tied to him, why he has to stop them, and why he had no choice but to seek out the Avengers. It does feel like the very fabric of space and time relies on this uneasy alliance. But Kang's a tough person to trust given how many feuds he's had with the Avengers. He's backstabbed them on numerous occasions, but this time, he does seem more vulnerable and honest.
That said, Carol would do well to find out how Myrddin and the Twilight Court will factor in as well. In 2022's Timeless event, they fought Kang to find the Missing Moment in Time. This is a specific point in the timeline from which a great historical prize could be acquired. It caused a lot of bloodshed, resulting in Kang teleporting away to avoid being killed. It's where he met Carol, stoking concerns about if Myrddin's legion will return. And more so, if they've been able to harness anything from the Moment. Kang did learn it's meant for heroes to access, but because it's all so mysterious, there's no telling who's running a ruse. The favorite will be a Kang who loves playing puppet master. This could lead to a massive battle royale between Myrddin's squad, Carol's team and the Impossible City's army.

Outside the collateral damage and casualties, the very essence of reality may well be at stake. One of the most overdone tropes in comics, and sci-fi in general, has been tampering with time. By fiddling with the temporal stream like this, the Avengers are changing the future. The Marvel Cinematic Universe touched on this, detailing how Branched Timelines would be formed. As such, it'd be intriguing to know what else has been changed due to Carol's team using this knowledge and reshaping reality.
This may be part of a domino effect that involves fighting the Ashen Combine, as well as Myrddin's army. Not to mention, this entire war could be linked to the Moment itself. It's worth remembering how many Marvel stories involving gods, aliens and magical beings have always made it clear not to tinker with time. It's been evident with the Infinity Gauntlet and Time Stone across the movies, cartoons, animated films and books as well. There'll always be ramifications, hinting Carol is incurring a cost she'll have to deal with down the line.
This time, she has the backing of her colleagues, but once more information comes to light, they might come to realize they made an error. Butterfly effects are something she'd regret, especially if they make the world a worse place. Is it selfish? Sure. But these heroes have good intentions, after all. Let's face it, no virtuous person would discard that intel and not rescue a slew of innocents. It's them being proactive, using Kang's gift as best they can to heal the planet. Ultimately, though, Kang always has a method to his madness and a reason for doing anything. One can only hope he's altruistic and humane this time around, because if the Avengers find out they were pawns, it'll be a tough blow to recover from, according to how damaged reality gets.
I'm a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you're bored by now, then you also don't want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I've written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I've scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I'd love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I'm on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen. So holler.
